Dr. Brea Chouinard, PhD, R.SLP
Brea completed a Masters of Speech Language Pathology (2002) and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science (2016) at the University of Alberta. Her clinical expertise revolves around neurorehabilitation (i.e., re-building brain connections) with a special interest in autism and aphasia. When Brea is not working clinically, she is a research associate at the UofA, where she studies language and communication in autistic adults. Brea’s research and clinical philosophies centre around access, community, and belonging. She loves to work with people on communally chosen goals by applying the principles of neuroplasticity (the idea that brains can change and form new connections).
Brea is interested in working with autistic teens and adults, and adults with aphasia, as well as their partners, parents, caregivers, and/ or friends. She combines the life participation approach with the principles of neuroplasticity, and loves to provide education and training about how the brain works, how we know the brain works, and how we can all communicate with each other better if we understand how each other’s brains work. She is currently offering short-term (e.g., 4-5 sessions) consultation, training, practise, and coaching in a functional, goal-based, intensive way.
