PRIVATE SPEECH ASSESSMENT

HOW TO BOOK AN ASSESSMENT OR INQUIRE ABOUT SPEECH & LANGUAGE TREATMENT?

  1. Call (780) 266-7709 to discuss your concerns, ask questions and schedule.

  2. Click the “BOOK CONSULTATION” link in the menu to email your question(s) directly to a Speech-Language Pathologist, and someone will respond within two business days regarding your concern.

I’VE BOOKED A SESSION - NOW WHAT?

  1. Once your session is booked you will be emailed a confirmation of the appointment with all additional information you will need including where our free parking is located and detailed information about our clinic space (located within the Greystone Business Park at 4232 97 Street).

  2. We ask you please reschedule your appointment if anyone attending the appointment is sick, and at this time, no deposit is required for booking an appointment.

  3. If you are 15 minutes late for your schedule appointment, it is considered missed.

COVERAGE/INSURANCE

Private speech and language services are covered by many extended health insurance plans. Many employers’ benefit plans provide coverage, up to a certain amount, similar to massage therapy or physiotherapy.

Baseline is working on setting up direct billing for services, stay tuned.

 

WHAT IS DONE DURING AN ASSESSMENT?

Assessments are generally scheduled for 1.5 hours, and the following is completed:

  • Parent interview to gather background information and main concerns.

  • SLP and the child have a conversation in order to gain a language sample and get to know the client.

  • Oral mechanism exam is completed (i.e., a look in their mouth to make sure everything is working as it should in order to produce speech sounds) with Covid-19 limitations being considered.

  • Formal and/or informal assessment tasks administered - whatever is needed for the individual assessment. If formal scores are not needed to inform a treatment approach or to support a referral to an external school or agency, then informal materials may also be used so a profile of strengths and challenges can be put together.

  • Wayfinding discussion: the SLP will discuss what treatment options are available to the family. This discussion is the most important part as we will let parents know what services are out there, and what they can expect for their child in terms of support. This way parents can know what they are entitled to advocate for, for their children.

  • Report completed (if needed): this can be as simple or involved as is needed by the family. A lengthy report meeting Alberta Education’s standards can be supplied, or a one page quick written summary of what was completed can be provided. Please note that we do charge for report writing time (if over and above the length of the appointment) if requested by the family or needed for referral purposes (e.g., to access Program Unit Funding or to be seen at the Infant and Preschool Assessment Service (IPAS) at the Glenrose). Our policy at Baseline is to send the report home after we have received payment for the appointment, and the report writing time.
